When comes to wool yarn spinning, people often talk about woolen craft or worsted craft. As known to all, woolen and worsted are two different classifications of spinning wool yarns. And there are some of their characteristics as below to know their difference.
The length of wool fibers
Woolen wool yarns are spun from short wool fibers about 1-3 inches long; and worsted wool yarns are spun from long wool fibers more than 3 inches in general.
The type of wool fibers
Woolen wool yarns are spun from medium or coarse diameter wool fibers; and worsted wool yarns are spun from fine diameter wool fibers.
The selection of wool material
The material of woolen wool yarns are washed, scoured and carded; the material of worsted wool yarn are washed, scoured, carded, combed and drawn.
The tensile strength of yarn
Woolen wool yarns are lower tensile strength than worsted wool yarns.
The twist of yarn
Woolen wool yarns: low to medium twist; worsted wool yarns: tighter twist
The hand feel of yarn
Woolen wool yarns are bulky, uneven and have soft, fuzzy appearance; worsted wool yarns are fine, smooth and have crisp appearance.
The weight
Woolen wool yarns are actually heavier than worsted ones.
And in addition, fabrics or knitwear that made up of woolen wool yarns are not as durable as worsteds; and fabrics or knitwear that made up of worsted wool yarn do hold crease better than woolens.
