The name mohair itself sums up and symbolizes the qualities of this product; In fact, it comes from the Turkian MUKHAYAR, meaning “ finest fleece, selected”
A product of fleece of the Angora goat, mohair was already known in Biblical times. In the book of Exodus we find the mention of altar drapings and curtains in the Jewish Tabernacle as made of pure and brilliant mohair. Mohair yarn product such as mohair scarf, mohair sweater are precious and expensive.
Recent findings demonstrate that the Angora goat originated in the highland of Eastern Asia. In 1893 it was first introduced into South Africa, one of the major world producers of mohair. The animal arrived in the united states by pure chance, having been mistaken for the Kashmir goat. Attempts to raise Angora goats have been successful only in Texas, where they find a suitable climate and environment.
