Organic wool yarn, just as its name implies, is the yarn made from organic wool material.
Organic wool is produced in ecology farms without chemicals and transgenosis. The sheep in those farms is raised freely in farms without disease and certified “being organic” by authority. Now Australia produces about 30 tons organic wool each year, accounting for 0.1% of the world total output. It is predicted that proportion would be raised to 5% to 10%. Organic wool is produced by free-ranging sheep in ecology farms. Organic wool is becoming an exciting topic in wool industry and organic wool is hot and popular in market. Organic wool is free of pesticides, formaldehyde, dioxin or other additives. Organic wool is produced in certified ecology workshop in which it would be cleaned by degradable agent, then combed and spun. In fact organic wool also means natural wool.
In May 2007, organic wool working group is started after Edinburgh IWTO meeting. The working group is mainly in charge of drafting the definition of organic wool and related product. In Nov. 2007, the first draft of the definition of organic wool and related product was submitted to Technology and standards committee as well as supplier forum by the group in IWTO meeting in Italy. After that the group revised the definition of organic wool and related product according to the feedback from IWTO and the committee. At the same time the related terms are also put on the agenda.
