Initial attempts to export the angora goat were made in the first half of the 1800’s, at which time it was discovered that this animal can only live in very special climatic conditions: it requires mild and dry summer and snowy winter.
These particular natural characteristics can be found both in South Africa and in Texas. The south African product is superior for its milky white beauty, and production has almost doubled over the last thirty years. In the same period of time, Texas, which produces an excellent quality of mohair, has maintain more or less the same level of production. Third in terms of both quality and quantity is turkey. It is important to point out that annual output of mohair of the world is about 5300 ton, that is only 0.01% of the total output of the natural animal fibre. And of which, the South Asia Mohair output accounts for 54%, and therefore qualifies as rare and precious fibre.
