There are two kinds of silk produced in China which is mulberry silk and tassah silk. Mulberry silk is produced by silkworm fed by mulberry leaf. Mulberry silk is white with some yellow in lustre, fine and smooth in handfeel, and long in fiber. Mulberry silk has a light smell special for animal fiber. The quilt made from mulberry silk is very soft and fitting. Another is tassah silk which is reeled off the cocoon of tassah. Tassah is commonly known as wild silkworm which is artifically bred in oak trees in North China and feed by oak leaves.
Compared with mulberry silk tassah silk is darker in color, mostly black and gray and short in fiber. Though there is difference of only one word the price of mulberry silk is twice as expensive as that of tassah silk. Because of dark color of tassah silk, it is often bleached and decolored by chemcials to make it easy to use but those chemical treatment is slightly bad to body health. Besides tassah silk contains much sericin which results in its comparely harsher and less smoother feel and darker color. And tassah silk has stronger rigidity.
